A Collaborative Compendium
Team Assignment
Due: Varies by Reading
Purpose: In this course you will come across many unfamiliar characters from history, and this assignment will help us keep them all straight and allow us to refresh our memories quickly and easily when we forget who someone is or why they’re important.
Task: You will be placed into groups of ~6 on the first day of class, and each group will be assigned one of the historical readings. Place your entries in the collaborative Google Sheet.
- As you complete the reading, note all of the names mentioned, who they were, and why they were important.
- Be sure to include everyone mentioned in the reading. The easiest way to do this is to list all of the named people in the Google Sheet first and then divide the entries among group members. It might also help to volunteer/elect one person to double check.
- The group will evenly divide the work amongst members. Each person from the group needs to contribute at least one record to the collaborative character compendium Google Sheet to receive credit for this assignment. See the grading note below.
- If it’s unclear what their position was or their importance, see if you can find out through a little research. If you have trouble, feel free to contact Dr. Garcia with questions.
- Record your entries as follows:
Criteria for Success: Ensure that you have listed all characters from the reading and that your entries are spelled correctly and accurate. If you use sources other than our readings (and you are welcome to do so), just be sure to add the citation in the column next to “Contributor.”
GRADING NOTE: If it is clear that most of the work has fallen to one person in the group, that person will receive extra credit, and the rest of the group members’ grades will be equivalent to the effort they have put in. For example, if there are 20 people named in the reading, and one person enters information for 15 of these characters, while the rest of the group members each contributed only one entry, the overachiever will receive 150/100 points, and the remainder of the group members will receive only 33/100 points, since each person should have contributed 3 entries a piece.
